Programmable Mist Maker is an open-source certified, easy-to-use, programmable mist device that treats mist as a creative material. Co-created with Shuang Cai, it centers around a custom ESP32-C6 PCB with integrated LiPo charging, a boost converter, and a high-voltage piezo driver, turning recycled containers and a small piezo disc into compact mist modules for interactive installations.
Together, we developed the circuit, PCB revisions, firmware, and enclosure designs as a shared hardware platform for artists, educators, and engineers. The project is fully documented and released as open source, including schematics, board files, Arduino libraries, and workshop materials so others can adapt, remix, and embed mist into their own work.
Programmable Mist Maker was first presented as a hands-on workshop at the 2025 Open Hardware Summit and has since been featured on Hackster.io, Seeed Studio, and the Make Magazine website, with ongoing community workshops and demos. It is part of the Apossible Applied Experiment Cohort as a core technology we are building upon, and it will be shared at the Scalable HCI Symposium 2026. We are also preparing to offer the mist maker as a purchasable kit in 2026.
